This fall, HPU Associate Professor of Economics Ken Schoolland took his expertise on the road, delivering a series of lectures that spanned from Texas to Toronto. Schoolland, HPU’s longest-serving professor with 45 years of experience, is renowned for his deep understanding of economics and his talent for engaging students in lively discussions. But it’s his venerated economics textbook, The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible, that has earned him international recognition. The book, a witty and accessible introduction to economic principles, has been embraced by readers worldwide for its blend of humor and insight. Recently, it was adapted into an animated film series that debuted at the prestigious Anthem Film Festival in Las Vegas.

In October, Schoolland was invited to Northwood University in Midland, Michigan, where he delivered a series of eight lectures as part of the Omniquest Speaker Series for the Freedom Seminar Lectures. These talks focused on the applications of economic concepts explored in Gullible. Schoolland's unique ability to present complex ideas in an engaging and relatable way captured the attention of students and faculty alike, making economics both accessible and entertaining.
A few weeks later, Schoolland took the stage at the Liberty International World Conference in Dallas, Texas, where he addressed the timely and controversial topic of immigration. His presentation, “The Hot Button Topic: Immigration,” examined the economic dimensions of immigration policy, sparking thoughtful discussions on how economic principles can help shape the debate.
In November, Schoolland traveled to Toronto to speak at the Toronto Democracy Forum, hosted by the World Anti Extremism Network. There, he presented “Combating Violent Extremism & Authoritarianism Through Ideas of Free Trade & Economy,” discussing how free markets and economic freedom can counter extremism and authoritarianism. His contributions were recognized with an Award of Appreciation for his dedication to promoting the values of liberty and free trade.
Throughout his travels, Schoolland continues to spread the ideas found in Gullible, sharing the book’s message of economic freedom with audiences around the world. Whether in the classroom or at international conferences, Schoolland’s influence extends far beyond HPU, making him a prominent voice in the global conversation about the power of economics to shape societies for the better.
