The Downtown Art Center (DAC) extended an invitation to HPUʻs Arts Entrepreneurship (ARTS 3000) students to take part in DACʻs Black Friday Craft Fair, which was held on November 29 and 30, 2024. The HPU students had a special chance to showcase the art they created, present their work, and engage with the Craft Fair patrons. DAC even generously waived the normal vendor fee for the budding HPU artists to participate in the Black Friday event.

“It has been a truly wonderful experience for our students to showcase the techniques they learned throughout the semester at the Downtown Art Center Black Friday Craft Fair,” Visual Arts faculty Alla Parsons said.  “The opportunity to display their art has allowed them to share their creativity with the community and gain valuable real-world experience.”

Earlier in the fall semester, DAC invited the HPU Arts students to a DAC-hosted workshop, where their team taught printmaking using gel pads and inks and provided all of the materials free of charge. The student-created artworks were among the pieces on display at the DAC Black Friday Craft Fair. Additionally, HPU students, including Arts and Markets majors, presented a wide range of their art, from paintings and photography to crocheted items and hand printed cards and paper products. The students also practiced their marketing skills promoting the Black Friday event on their social media channels.

“Our studentsʻ participation in the Downtown Art Center Black Friday Craft Fair not only highlights our studentsʻ talents, it underscores the invaluable partnership we have with the Downtown Art Center, located just blocks away from our university,” Director of Performing Arts and Associate Professor of Music Teresa McCreary said. “We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to many more successful events together.”

DAC is located at 1041 Nu'uanu Avenue on the second floor. The collaboration between DAC and HPU enriches the educational experience and strengthens the Universityʻs community ties, emphasizing its focus that “the city is our campus.” HPU students benefit greatly from learning through community involvement and engagement.
