Hanh Nguyen, Ph.D. (TESOL Program, Department of English and Applied Linguistics, College of Liberal Arts) just published a co-edited book, Dẫn nhập Phân tích Hội thoại và Áp dụng vào Tiếng Việt [Introduction of Conversation Analysis and Application to Vietnamese] (2026, Vietnam Education Publishing House). The book is the first full-length manuscript written in Vietnamese and using Vietnamese data to introduce Conversation Analysis.
Nguyen led a team of five co-editors: Hanh thi Nguyen of Hawaiʻi Pacific University, Ngoc Bich Nguyen of Hanoi University of Industry (Vietnam), Minh Thuy Nguyen of University of Otago (New Zealand), Ly Phuong Tran of Saigon University (Vietnam), and Hiep Van Nguyen of Hanoi University of Industry (Vietnam). The contributing authors come from the USA, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Macau.
In 14 chapters, the edited volume goes from theoretical foundation and methodology to key topics in conversation analysis, with special considerations for analyzing Vietnamese and directions for future research. In addition to being the lead co-editor, Nguyen of HPU contributed the introduction to the volume and co-authored five chapters.
The book is the culmination of Nguyen's efforts with VietCA, a group of scholars dedicated to conversation analysis of Vietnamese data. VietCA holds monthly meetings on Zoom and has successfully organized and co-organized an international conference and two international symposia.
Nguyen is thankful to the NEH grant to Hawaiʻi Pacific University for supporting her research on Vietnamese language, including data collection and conference travels, which has led to this publication.
