Hoʻokō Rising Scholars Program

The Hoʻokō Rising Scholars Program is a federally funded program committed to the success of first-time, first-year students from under-represented or under-resourced communities at Hawaiʻi Pacific University. The Hawaiian word Hoʻokō finds its origin in the root word kō meaning to fulfill, as in a promise. Our goal is to create equity by providing additional resources and support to elevate these students’ academic skills and performance and build their expertise and network to move into their ideal careers.

Hoʻokō students receive personal assistance with navigating their first two years of college, including building their college network of friends; strengthening skills to navigate their classes, projects, and exams; exploring future careers that best suits their interests; and refining their academic and career plans to graduate and move into their future jobs. Our staff consists of our own dedicated tutors, coordinators, and academic and career coaches, who work together to ensure that every student gets personal, 1-on-1 guidance, support, and resources to overcome the challenges in the classroom, at home, and in their search for their career and place in the community.
