HPU's Master of Science in Construction Management is the first and only program in Hawai'i.

HPU Assistant Professor and Master of Science in Construction Management Program Chair Charles Chen, Ph.D., has been selected as a guest editor for a special issue of Frontiers in Sustainable Cities, a peer-reviewed international publication focused on the intersection of urban development and environmental sustainability.

The special issue, titled "Role of Construction in Achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals to urban resilience in the post-pandemic context," examines how the construction and facilities management sector can advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The collection will focus on the adoption of smart technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT), the principles of the circular economy, and clean energy innovations in modular construction, all in service of building more resilient cities in a post-pandemic world.

Chen joins Ka Leung Lok from the University of South Wales and Andrew James Smith from Edinburgh Napier University in the issue, which invites contributions through April 29, 2026.

“Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals requires collaboration across disciplines. The built environment plays a critical role in shaping sustainable and resilient communities, and initiatives such as HPU’s sustainability programs demonstrate how education, research, and industry partnerships can work together to advance environmental and social outcomes,” said Chen.
