Working under seven U.S. Presidents, HPU alumnus Steve Simpson ‘95 has dedicated 40 years to federal service for the United States. Currently serving as the Headquarters Marine Corps Security Director, Simpson’s career has included leadership positions in the Marine Corps and the FBI. His notable journey, much of which unfolded at the Pentagon, began with a pivotal decision to pursue a master’s degree at HPU while stationed in Hawai‘i.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Pittsburgh, Simpson grew up with a passion for service. Inspired by the mystique of the Marines and their reputation as the best of the best, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve while still in high school. After graduating from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, he commissioned as a Marine Corps officer, embarking on a career that spanned two decades, taking him to locations that include Korea, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Bosnia.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Marines. I originally wanted to be a pilot, but as a six-foot-six officer who doesn’t enjoy roller coasters, I knew that wasn’t the right fit for me,” Simpson said with a laugh. “Instead, I became a military police officer, which turned out to be a perfect match.”

Simpson’s Marine Corps service included deployments during Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and the Los Angeles riots, as well as multiple tours at the Pentagon. During 9/11, while serving as a Marine Corps officer and completing advanced studies at the War College, he was handpicked to develop operational plans for Afghanistan, a real honor for a young officer.

It was while stationed at Camp Smith on Oahu and walking by an HPU classroom every day that he was reminded about HPU and the various educational opportunities the University offers to active-duty military members.

“My wife gave me that extra nudge to pursue a master’s degree,” Simpson said with a smile. “After I inquired, I knew that HPU’s human resources program was the right fit for me. I enrolled and absolutely loved my classes. The skills I gained, especially in budgeting, have been invaluable throughout my career.”

Many of Simpson’s courses were held at Camp Smith, where he balanced the demands of military life with his academic pursuits. He credits his HPU education with opening doors, particularly during his transition to the FBI after retiring from the Marine Corps.

Due to the age limit for joining the FBI, Simpson pursued a civilian role, beginning with an application for a security officer position. However, his qualifications, including his master’s degree from HPU, led to an unexpected opportunity.

“The assistant director of human resources at the FBI saw my credentials and said, ‘You’re overqualified for this role. How about becoming a unit chief in human resources?’ That degree from HPU made all the difference,” Simpson said.

During his 10 years at the FBI, Simpson supported the hostage rescue team and worked in the FBI Laboratory’s strategic integration Chief and evidence handling policy. There, he led strategic planning initiatives, developed program management standards, and implemented key performance metrics to enhance organizational efficiency.

Despite his success, he missed the camaraderie of the Marine Corps, prompting his return to the Pentagon, where he currently oversees law enforcement and security policies across the Marine Corps to ensure the safety and readiness of its global operations.

Simpson currently lives in Virginia with his wife. His eldest daughter is an Air Force pilot, and his younger daughter is pursuing a veterinary career. A stepdaughter is studying law and politics at Catholic University.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, he emphasizes the importance of family and health.

“Spending quality time with loved ones and being at peace brings me great joy and happiness,” he shared. “Education is also part of finding that happiness. If a person wants a quality education in paradise, HPU is a fantastic choice. I recommend every student to always think about your career goals and to have a plan for your next steps after graduation.

“The opportunities at HPU are truly tremendous, so take full advantage of them. When you combine time with family, good health, strong financial happiness, and a great education, you will find that perfect balance to carry you through to a rewarding, spectacular life. It sure worked for me, and I believe it will work for you as well.”
