FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
COURSE SCHEDULE AND MATERIALS
When does the course officially begin and end each day?
The short course runs daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with an hour break for lunch and short coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon. Specific times for lab sessions, lectures, and field trips (if applicable) will be outlined in the detailed schedule you’ll receive before the course starts.
Will there be any evening or weekend activities?
Some optional group dinners or networking events may be scheduled in the evenings. We will email all participants and provide details about any additional activities in the course schedule.
Will I receive any course materials or pre-reading before the course starts?
Yes. About two weeks before the course, we will email registered participants a digital packet containing the syllabus, reading materials, and any pre-lab instructions. Reviewing these materials beforehand will help you make the most of the in-person sessions.
LODGING
Is lodging being organized for participants?
We are in the process of reserving a block of rooms at a local hotel in Waikiki at a discounted rate. Details will be provided soon
Do I have to stay at the organized lodging?
You are not required to stay at the organized lodging. However, please note that our shuttle transportation to the course sites departs only from this hotel. If you stay elsewhere, you will need to arrange your own transportation to the organized lodging each day.
TRANSPORTATION
Will there be transportation provided to course sites?
Yes. An HPU shuttle will transport participants from the Ala Moana Hotel lobby to the various course sites, departing around 8:00 AM and returning around 5:00 PM (exact times may vary by day). The shuttle schedule and pickup details will be emailed prior to the course start date.
Do I need to rent a car?
A rental car is optional. The shuttle will cover all official course-related transportation. However, if you wish to explore the island outside of scheduled activities, a rental car or rideshare service may be more convenient.
How can I get from the airport to Waikiki or the hotel?
You can easily take a rideshare (Uber, Lyft, etc.) from Honolulu Airport to Waikiki or Ala Moana. The airport has designated rideshare pickup areas. Public transportation (TheBus) also has routes to Waikiki; please consult their website for schedules.
FOOD
Will there be food provided?
Yes, lunch will be provided daily (Monday–Thursday) during the short course. After you register, you will receive an email with a link to submit any dietary restriction information at least two weeks before the course starts. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee special accommodations after that date.
Where do you recommend participants eat for dinner?
There are numerous dining options in and around Ala Moana Mall and the various course sites, including Kalapawei Deli, Keneke’s, Ono Steak, and L&L. You can also explore the mall’s food court for quicker meals.
OTHER
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Please wear lab-appropriate clothing: long pants, closed-toe shoes, and tied-back hair, during scheduled days to perform laboratory activities. We provide goggles, but you can bring your own. Also, bring a notepad, pen, and laptop for notes. Pack walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle with your travel items. If you plan to explore the island, bring swimwear and beach gear.
Can I wear sandals during non-lab sessions?
Yes, sandals are acceptable for non-lab and non-warehouse sessions. However, if your schedule includes a lab or warehouse activity, you should have closed-toe shoes ready, as these may be required for safety.
Can I bring my own samples to analyze during the course?
Due to limited lab time and equipment scheduling, we cannot accommodate personal samples for analysis. The course schedule is fully dedicated to our planned curriculum and group activities.
What is the typical weather in Oahu during Summer?
Expect warm, tropical weather with average daytime highs around 80°F (27°C). Brief rain showers are possible, so you may want to pack a lightweight jacket or umbrella. Some course venues are air-conditioned, so bringing a light sweater is recommended if you get chilly easily.
