This summer, we are reading transgender rights activist Janet Mock's stirring memoir, Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More

Mock, a trans woman of Hawaiian and Black descent, relays her experience growing up in Oʻahu's Kalihi neighborhood. She imparts hardships she experienced—poverty, parents with addictions—as well as moments of light, like finding support in Hawaiian culture for māhū, and the embrace of family and friends.

Offering accessible language and insight on an underrepresented and marginalized population, Redefining Realness is Mock's story of achieving self-realization and practicing authenticity.
