HPU Associate Professor and Clinical Director of the Graduate Nursing Practice program David Smith, Ph.D., presented his research at the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nursing (AMSN) Annual Convention in Toronto in September 2024. The event was a gathering for medical-surgical nurses to explore best practices, current research, and practical solutions in the field.

Smith’s presentation, titled “Implementing Evidence-Based Hourly Rounding to Reduce Falls in Adult Patients,” addressed the role of structured hourly rounding protocols in enhancing patient safety and reducing fall incidents in medical-surgical units. His research demonstrated that by integrating regular patient checks and addressing patients' needs proactively, hospitals can decrease fall rates and improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.

"The implementation of these hourly rounding practices ensures timely assistance to patients, minimizing the risk of fall-related injuries while also improving the workflow for nursing staff," Smith explained. He shared case studies and best practices in his presentation, stressing the importance of consistent communication, thorough documentation, and ongoing staff training to sustain improvements in patient safety.

He noted that hospitals participating in the research have already reported a decrease in patient falls, reinforcing the potential benefits of this approach. Smith’s work highlights how evidence-based practices, when integrated effectively, can foster safer patient environments and streamline clinical operations.

"Sharing David’s research nationally not only provides relevant knowledge to nurses and nursing students, but also highlights the expertise and innovation of our faculty,” said HPU Dean of the School of Nursing Edna Magpantay-Monroe, Ed.D., APRN, CMDCP. “David’s work reflects the mission of HPU’s School of Nursing, contributing to the advancement of healthcare and improving patient outcomes through evidence-based practices. We are proud to have him represent HPU and our nursing programs on such a significant platform."
