Researchers from the Oceanic Institute (OI) of Hawaiʻi Pacific University showcased their work on the international stage and explored new opportunities for collaboration during a visit to Singapore in June 2026.
From June 2-5, OI researchers participated in the World Aquaculture Singapore 2026 conference and trade show, which attracted more than 2,000 participants from over 50 countries. The conference theme, "High Yield Production Through Nutrition, Health, Genetics, and Resources," highlighted advancements in aquaculture research and production.
Dustin Moss, Ph.D., director of OI's Shrimp Department, presented research titled "Use of Genomic-Based Approaches for the Genetic Improvement of Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei." Katie Hiew, M.S., of OI's Finfish Department shared findings from her presentation, "Larval Development of the Squarespot Anthias Pseudanthias pleurotaenia Under Captive Conditions."
The conference provided an opportunity for OI researchers to share their expertise with an international audience while connecting with aquaculture professionals and researchers from around the world.

While in Singapore, Hiew and Shaun Moss, Ph.D., executive director of OI, also met with representatives from the Singapore Oceanarium to discuss potential collaborations in marine ornamental fish culture.
The Singapore Oceanarium features 22 immersive themed zones and is home to thousands of marine animals representing hundreds of species. During their visit, the OI team toured the facility and received a behind-the-scenes look at the Oceanarium's laboratories and research operations.
OI researchers presented an overview of the institute's marine ornamental fish research and exchanged ideas with Natascha Wosnick, Ph.D., research manager at the Singapore Oceanarium, and Salam Marikan, M.Sc., population sustainability manager. Discussions focused on opportunities to advance marine ornamental fish culture through future collaboration.
The visit underscored OI's commitment to advancing aquaculture research, sharing knowledge with the global scientific community, and building partnerships that support marine conservation and sustainable seafood production.
