On April 24, screens across Hawai‘i and well beyond became a stage for something more than presentations. They became a window into the future.

At Hawai‘i Pacific University’s 14th Annual Capstone Symposium, students from across disciplines shared the work that represents the culmination of their academic journeys, projects shaped not only by what they’ve learned, but also by how they plan to apply it in the world ahead.

Held virtually, the Symposium brought together students, faculty, families, and community members for a full day of presentations, dialogue, and recognition.

A Day Built Around Student Achievement

The day began with an opening ceremony before moving into six concurrent presentation sessions, where students presented research, applied projects, internship/practicum experiences, and creative work developed throughout their programs. Spanning 20 disciplines, the 69 presentations focus on community health, equity, and well-being; environmental and marine science in Hawai‘i; culture, identity, and social justice; education, communication, and social behavior; technology, innovation, and applied solutions; policy, governance, and global issues; and creative works and humanities. Presentation topics ranged from kūpuna (elder) support and social connection to microplastics in humpback whales, from Filipino and Micronesian identity to political communication and media shifts, from digital activism in diaspora communities to multimedia creative projects, and from language teaching and study abroad to blockchain for fraud prevention.

For each presenter, the Symposium offered a unique opportunity: to share not just an academic requirement, but a body of work that reflects their growth, creativity, and readiness for what comes next.

From early morning sessions to the afternoon award ceremony, the event highlighted the depth and diversity of learning across HPU’s colleges, with each project connecting classroom knowledge to real-world application.

From Classroom to Career

At its core, the Capstone Symposium is about more than presenting, it’s about transition.

Students use the experience to demonstrate competency, innovation, and professional readiness, while connecting their academic work to future careers or continued education.

Whether through research, internships, creative projects, or applied fieldwork, each presentation reflects a broader purpose: translating education into impact.

For many students, it is the first time their work is shared with an audience that extends beyond the classroom—one that includes mentors and members of the broader community.

A Community of Support

Behind every presentation is a network of support that makes the Symposium possible.

Faculty mentors guide students through the capstone process, while reviewers and judges help shape and evaluate the work. The event itself is a collaborative effort, supported by Academic Affairs, the Career Development Center, HPU Libraries, Student Life, and Marketing and Communications.

This collective effort reflects a defining aspect of the HPU experience: learning is not done alone, it is built through mentorship, collaboration, and shared purpose.

A Moment That Marks What’s Next

As the final presentations concluded and awards were announced, the Symposium served as both an ending and a beginning. For graduating students, it marked the culmination of years of work. But more importantly, it signaled their readiness to move forward, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to contribute in meaningful ways. The Capstone Symposium continues to stand as one of HPU’s most powerful expressions of student success, where ideas are not only explored, but realized, shared, and carried forward.
