HPU Assistant Professor of Elementary Education Kathryn Vaughn, Ed.D., has won the 2024 HPU Teacher of the Year award. In a surprise announcement made in Vaughn’s elementary education classroom on April 17, HPU Provost and Senior Vice President Jennifer Walsh, Ph.D. and HPU Dean of the College of Professional Studies Mani Sehgal presented Vaughn with her award to a classroom of cheerful students.

Vaughn’s eyes sparked with excitement as Walsh read to the class that their teacher has been awarded the prestigious award. A wave of applause erupted, filling the classroom with warmth as tears of joy glistened on the cheeks of many who were all touched by Vaughn’s well-deserved recognition.

"I want to thank everyone at HPU for their support and encouragement, especially my students who I cherish, appreciate, and love. I am so proud of them, knowing they will be amazing educators who will inspire future generations. I remind them that there are children waiting especially for them, and it’s their responsibility to be prepared, to love that child with open arms and a big heart,” said Vaughn. “I also want to thank Dean Sehgal for his incredible support. He is a trusting dean who always encourages me to create in the classroom.”

Vaughn joined the HPU faculty in 2016 as an adjunct lecturer and soon became Assistant Professor and the Coordinator for Elementary Education program at the University. In 2012-2013, she was honored with a Fulbright Scholarship in London, England, adding to her collection of teaching accolades amassed over her distinguished career.

She has taught in elementary schools and middle grade schools for decades, both public and private, as well as internationally. Vaughn holds a bachelor of arts in elementary education from Central College in Pella, Iowa, as well as a master of science in urban education from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She earned a doctorate in education from Seattle Pacific University.

Vaughn's dedication to education and innovation is inspiring. Her commitment to teaching excellence has earned her various awards, including the City University of Seattle’s President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and recognition as the Outstanding Teacher of American History by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and numerous science grant awards.

Through active participation in professional publications, presentations, and workshops, Vaughn has made significant contributions to elementary education, particularly in STEAM education and curriculum design. Her enthusiasm for enhancing student learning experiences is evident in initiatives such as co-designing sustainability endorsements and organizing science summer camps. Vaughn's research interests, which encompass integrating arts with STEM subjects and promoting global education, underscore her holistic approach to teaching and learning.
