The HPU Student Nurses Association (SNA) recently attended the 73rd National Student Nurses Association Annual Convention, held in Seattle from April 9-13. This year’s delegates were officers of SNA, led by President Michelle Hunt, Vice President Maranda McCollum, Halo Yoshiki, and Kameryn Di Dias. HPU students had the opportunity to meet other nursing students across the U.S. and attended multiple education workshops and learning sessions, including a live NCLEX-RN Review. Students also had the chance to meet nursing leaders and SNA officers from other chapters and schools at the convention and took part in the organization’s election.

The Hawaiʻi team won the award for “Advocating for the Future – 2025 Health Advocacy.” The project was spearheaded by McCollum and Kale Sinay (both members of the HPU SNA and HiSNA board). SNA faculty advisors, Joy Bliss, Ph.D., RN, and Leeah Javier, DNP, RN, accompanied the students to the convention.

HPU School of Nursing Dean Edna Magpantay-Monroe, Ed.D., APRN, CMDCP, has been a big supporter for the various events and activities that center on student leadership, advocacy, and innovation skills.

“This is the second consecutive year that the HPU SNA has attended the annual NSNA convention since the pandemic. Students and faculty need to be engaged outside of Hawaiʻi to ensure we are keeping up with the rest of the nation in terms of policies and best nursing practice,” said Magpantay-Monroe. “The aspiration is to be a Stellar school awardee, and the students and faculty are working through this process. I am glad to always support this activity being a sustaining NSNA member since 2011.”

This year’s theme was “Ignite, Innovate and Lead,” and it truly inspired HPU students as they return home rejuvenated, with new knowledge and stories of fun-filled memories of the convention.
