On February 17, 2024, the HPU TESOL program enjoyed attending and presenting at Hawaii TESOL at Brigham Young University - Hawaii in Lāʻie.

Maria Levy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics, held an interactive workshop on innovative techniques to teach vocabulary, using free digital tools such as COCA, FLAX, and Google.

MA TESOL student Yuhui Du delivered an insightful talk about code-switching between Mandarin and English in popular songs in China written by ABC (American Born Chinese) singers, with implications for language teaching.

BA TESOL student Jada Bruno gave an engaging poster session about using the game "Catchphrase" in the language classroom.

TESOL faculty member Jean Kirschenmann and retired HPU faculty member Sally La Luzerne-Oi hosted the Hawaii TESOL - Ukraine TESOL liaison booth, showcasing Hawaii TESOL’s long-term collaboration with Ukraine TESOL and fund-raising efforts for Ukraine.

Attending and presenting this annual international conference organized by the state’s TESOL association is an important aspect of professional development for students and faculty. We look forward to bringing more presentations to Hawaii TESOL 2025!
