In December 2023, our Esports Arena was once again the proud host for the Hawaii Esports State Finals, welcoming middle and high schools from across the islands. The event was a significant highlight, with over 90 schools competing in nine different games, drawing a crowd of more than 500 over the two-day championship.

To kick off the new year, the Zippy's Hawaii Esports Invitational (pictured) on January 26, 2024, marked a unique moment for HPU Esports, as we took on roles as hosts, operators, and competitors in a first-of-its-kind event.

Competing in person at HPU against teams from Michigan State University, Stonybrook College, and UH Manoa, our team engaged in a thrilling Valorant competition. Michigan State and their peak rank #1 player emerged victorious, taking home a memorable surfboard trophy. The event also extended beyond competition, incorporating cultural exchange with a private event at Zippy's Vineyard location and providing opportunities for local high schools and the public to engage in gaming activities.

This year, the Esports program also embarked on an innovative collaboration with HPU's Biology department and local neuroscientists. Titled "Esports and Athletic Cognitive Performance Study," this research initiative aims to delve into cognitive performance and brain health, exploring the impact of numerous factors on the body while competitively gaming and using the data modern games provide as a baseline. It's a pioneering effort to blend the competitive edge and data of Esports with the science of modern healthcare.

As we move into spring, the schedule is packed with exciting activities, including the first Hawaii High School Athletic Association Esports Championship (operated by PlayVS), another Spring Final, and the Collegiate Valorant season. HPU Esports will also be off-site at various community events. Replicating the success of the "Collectibles and Cuties" fair in Mililani on February 10, 2024, we will participate in many recruiting activities. La Pietra's Tech Day in March is next.

These events highlight our commitment to providing access and a platform for esports, tech-enabled events, and community at HPU.
