Martinez was presented the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays for his contributions to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the United States. Martinez is the former chief historian of the USS Arizona Memorial and Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Hart was a featured guest on the History Channel’s Emmy-nominated special, Live from Pearl Harbor, and a featured speaker at the 60th and 65th anniversary Pearl Harbor Attack Symposiums. His students have worked in educational partnership with the National Parks Service and the USS Arizona Museum Association on projects such as developing educational outreach materials and redesigning the Memorial admission tickets.
