The HPU Makerspace Challenge is right around the corner, a dynamic event where all HPU students are encouraged to express their creativity and innovation through hands-on product design in one of the four challenge categories.

Located in the center atrium of Aloha Tower Marketplace, the HPU Makerspace is more than a competition venue — it's a 900-square-foot hub designed for students across all majors and backgrounds. Packed with cutting-edge equipment like 3D printers, a direct-to-garment machine, a laser cutter, and more, the HPU Makerspace offers everything you need to turn your dream product into a reality.
Challenge Categories
- Community Impact:
Designs that address social issues, improve community well-being, health and wellness, or sustainability.
- Smart Living:
Products that simplify everyday tasks.
- Cultural Creativity:
Products that reflect or celebrate the diversity of Hawaiian or Pacific cultures.
- HPU Inspired:
HPU-branded products for students. These submissions should include either the HPU logo, mascot, or other HPU-specific branding.

- Pre-Registration: January 7, 2025
- Information Session: January 14, 2025
- Sign-up Deadline: February 1, 2025
- Team Finalization and Mixer: February 13, 2025
- Competition Begins: February 17, 2025
- Competition Ends: February 24, 2025
- Product Presentation and Judging: February 28, 2025
Judging Criteria
What will set your project apart? Judges are looking for product originality, marketability, potential profit, and how well your product solves a problem. Is it easy to manufacture? Expandable? Demonstrate its potential and make your pitch count!
Cash Prizes
- First Place: $1,000 per winning team in each of the four categories
- Second Place: $500 per winning team in each of the four categories
- All Participants will receive a $20 Amazon Gift Card*
Remember, all students need to complete a required Makerspace training session before the competition kicks off. This ensures everyone is equipped to use the tools safely and effectively.
