Master of Social Work (MSW) and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students and faculty from HPU’s School of Social Work visited `Āina Wellness Academy in Makiki Valley for their Fall 2023 Cultural Retreat. During this culturally-based service-learning day, the group participated in cultural protocols, learned about the history of Maunalaha, had the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiences at the host's family property (a historical loʻi - kalo patch), and concluded the day with a debriefing of their own experiences. The School of Social Work conducts cultural retreats every semester for BSW and MSW students to stay connected with the community and to learn how to be culturally humble and sensitive, further developing their social work professional knowledge, values, and skills.
