Arts Instructor and Scientists Exhibit Work at Bishop Museum

Denise Karabinus, who instructs Sustainable Art and Design, ARTS 1003, in the College of Professional Studies, recently collaborated with scientists at the Bishop Museum studying shipworms. She prints directly from the drift wood collected from windward beaches. Karabinus said, “Like shipworms, artist and printmakers carve wood.” Using woodblocks carved by nature’s printmaker, shipworms, Karabinus has printed and layered together the scientist’s field notes and original illustrations to reveal beautiful patterns that unite science and art for understanding the world. Her work is on display at the Bishop Museum Adventure Center through May 1. More information on the exhibit is posted here. 

ARTS 1003 is being offered by Karabinus in Spring B (March 9-May 3) at the Kaneohe Education Center. As part of this course, students work out on the beach collecting drift wood and beach debris to create upcycled works of art.
