Our Lady of Peace Cathedral Is Over 175 Years Old

Completed in 1843, Our Lady of Peace Cathedral Basilica is the oldest building on Fort Street Mall. Located opposite the FS building, the cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Bishop of Honolulu. Like Kawaiaha‘o Church, the walls of the building were constructed from coral. However, the coral was later covered with other materials, obscuring its appearance. St. Damien of Moloka‘i, who was noted for his work with victims of Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy, was ordained a priest at the church in 1864. The bells located in the tower were sent from France and were installed in the middle of the 19th century. Around the same time, a large exterior clock from Chile was added to the church. Write-up and photo by Associate Professor of History Douglas Askman, Ph.D.
