Assistant Professor of Music Alec Schumacker, D.M.A. Won World Projects Composition Contest

“A Slumber,” a choral piece written by Alec Schumacker, D.M.A. won the 2018 World Projects Composition Contest and will be performed at the 2019 Sounds of Summer Festival in Los Angeles at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The piece is one movement from a requiem written by Schumacker.  “I wanted the movement to be tied to one of the stages of grief, so I tried to find texts and poems that suited a requiem and each of those stages. “A Slumber” is the fourth movement - depression, based on a poem by William Wordsworth,” says Schumacker.

The 5th annual competition presents unique opportunities for new connections to be made through promoting emerging composers and collaborations between composers, conductors, and student performers. The competition also provides a platform where these compositions can be published and kept alive through future performances
