New Hawai‘i Pacific University President Dr. Geoffrey Bannister is scheduled to participate in a bicycle ride on Sunday that celebrates the life of HPU student Zachary Manago, who was killed last year in a cycling accident.
Bannister, a former cycling champion in New Zealand, is scheduled to speak at the State Capitol Building on July 10 at 7:30 a.m. Bannister then plans to depart from the Capitol to join a segment of the ride, organized by the Hawaii Bicycling League.
“Zach Manago’s Ride in Paradise” is a two-day ride scheduled to begin Saturday morning in Wahiawa, at the site where he was killed while cycling. Manago, who died Dec. 17, strongly supported bicycle safety. Among his final research assignments at HPU was a paper advocating more bicycle lanes.
Manago was a graduate of Moanalua High School and a member of the HPU baseball team. Athletics Director Darren Vorderbruegge and HPU athletes also plan to take part in the ride.
