BiographyPenny Pence Smith, Ph.D., is associate professor of marketing in the College of Business Administration at Hawaii Pacific University. She brings five decades of professional experience in marketing andmarketing communications to her position. Prior to joining HPU in 2005, Dr. Smith was the founder and President of Medical Marketing Management, a consulting firm in the southeastern US, specializing in public health, healthcare and public service marketing, social marketing and management. Previously she was an executive in public relations and marketing consulting firms, as well as associated with J. Walter Thompson Company in Los Angeles and BBDO/TFB in the Silicon Valley. In her earlier career she was a newspaper correspondent and bureau manager for the New York Times Special Features Syndicate and a westcoast editor for Warner Communication entertainment publications.
Dr. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master's Degree in Communication Management from the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California and a BA in Communication from the University of Washington. At HPU she has been a Department Chair, a Program Chair and Chair of the Communication Department and College of Business Faculty assemblies. She has held previous faculty positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Los Angeles Pierce College.
