Welcome to the inaugural issue of Fresh Perspectives: HPU's Anthology of First-Year Writing. The HPU English Department is pleased to present for the first time some of the best writing produced in the first-year writing classes taught during the Fall 2012 semester. We would also like to acknowledge the many fine writers who were nominated but who could not be included due to space limitations.
We are pleased with diversity of voices, topics, rhetorical and discursive approaches, and perspectives reflected in this pilot issue. The English Department is currently accepting nominations from Spring 2013 first-year writing classes, to appear in our Fall 2013 issue. It is our hope that this project will become a regular part of HPU's first-year writing program, something that both students and faculty will eagerly anticipate. We hope that the contributors here will discover how satisfying it can be to write not only for teachers, but for what we in composition studies call "real purposes and real audiences."
