Safia-Mohamud

"HPU is like a global village that welcomes people of all different ethnic backgrounds. I have students in my class from all continents. Most of the people here have made the decision to step outside of their normal routine in search of something a bit more exciting.

Through HPU, I engaged in a paid internship at Walt Disney World in Florida. I spent four months working in the Magic Kingdom which was a great cultural experience. My coworkers were also international and we developed a deep universal bond.

With the connections I’ve made with people from all different countries, I am well equipped to travel and work anywhere in the world. After I receive my diploma from HPU, I intend to seek employment in Europe."

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Admissions

Q: How many students are at HPU?

A: Just under 9,000.

Q: Is there an essay required for the admission application? What about letters of recommendation?

A: In most cases, both letters of recommendations and/or essays are not required as part of the application process for students who meet the minimum requirements. They can, however, provide us more insight into who you are, as well as evidence of your intellectual and creative achievements.  Click on the Admissions link located above for details on admission requirements information.

Q: Does HPU accept advanced placement (AP) exams, and how much credit is awarded?

A: Both AP and IB exams are accepted. Generally a score of three or higher (AP) or four or higher (IB) on an exam translates into college credit at HPU. Anywhere between three and 10 credits may be awarded depending on the type of exam. For more information, you may select the Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate links on the left.

Q: How hard is it to get the classes I need to take?

A: It is easy to get the classes you need to take. You work with an academic advisor prior to every registration to assure you will graduate in four years, less than that if you have transfer credit or take courses in the summer. Use the Advising Center link for further information.

Q: How large are HPU's classes?

A: The average class size at HPU is 25.

Q: Will teaching assistants be teaching the freshman courses?

A: HPU does not use teaching assistants.  All classes are taught by full-time or adjunct instructors.

Q: What is the student/teacher ratio at HPU?

A: 18:1

Q: Do I need to have taken a language prior to attending HPU?

A: Foreign language is not a requirement for admission to HPU.  However, some majors may require that a foreign language be taken at HPU.

Q: How hard is it to change my major?

A: It is not difficult to change your major.  Make sure you meet with your academic advisor at the start of each term.  They are here to assist you in making academic decisions such as this.

Q: How safe is the campus?

A: Honolulu is rated as one of the safest cities of more than 500,000 people in the country and you are likely to find this true on our campuses as well.  Follow common sense rules of personal safety and you are not likely to have any problems.  For a detailed overview, use the scroll-down box entitled About HPU, click "Employment", then open Campus Security Statistics in the Uniquely HPU box to the left.

Q: How do I get an e-mail account, and is it free?

A: HPU provides free e-mail accounts to its accepted students through HPU Pipeline.  Your log-in and temporary password will be sent to you along with your Letter of Acceptance. On-site access to the Internet is available.

Q: Do I need to bring my own computer to campus?

A: HPU does not require students to have their own computer but it is highly recommended.

Q: Can I bring a car to campus?

A:

You can, but you really don't need one. Honolulu's public transit system The Bus has been rated as one of the top-ranked systems in the country.  Available at our bookstore, students are able to purchase the U-pass (a discounted student bus pass), which costs $102 and are valid through one semester.  Students need only to show their student ID at the time of purchase.

If you do plan to bring a car to campus, parking, for a charge, is available in commercial parking garages and parking lots.  Many offer special discounts to HPU students.  Inquire at each location for any available HPU special rate. Note:  Hawai'i Pacific University does not provide an institutionally-owned parking garage or parking lot in downtown Honolulu for the use of its students or visitors.

Parking available at the windward Hawai'i Loa campus is open to visitors; commuter students attending classes and faculty/staff assigned to this campus; and students living in the Hawai'i Loa residence halls.  Go to Campus Parking under the Student Services link for detailed information and fees.

Q: What is there to do at HPU when students are not in class?

A: There are over 80 student organizations and clubs to join, and opportunities to participate and enjoy intramural sports, art, drama, and athletic and social events.  Use the Student Life link for more information.

Q: How do I get around between campuses?

A: HPU provides a free shuttle between the two main campuses. Use the Inter-campus Shuttle Service link for more information.
