HPU names Yoo Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities

Dr. Esther S. Yoo
HONOLULU — Dr. Esther S. Yoo has been appointed Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Hawai‘i Pacific University.
“We are honored to have Esther on our team,” said Dr. Teresa McCreary, HPU’s Director of Performing Arts. “She works with our students at a very high level of musicianship.”
Previously, Yoo held faculty positions at Hollins University in Virginia and the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Yoo serves as the Artistic Director of the O‘ahu Choral Society and conducts both the Honolulu Symphony Chorus and Honolulu Chamber Choir. She is president of the Hawai‘i Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, and music director at Christ United Methodist Church. She has conducted major choral and symphonic works with the Honolulu Symphony, Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, Hawaii Youth Symphony and Hawaii Symphony.
A native of Toronto, Yoo holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. She received her undergraduate degree in Music Education and a master’s degree in Conducting from the University of Toronto. Yoo graduated with an Artist Diploma in Piano Performance from the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. As a conductor, Yoo was invited as a conducting fellow at the Oregon Bach Festival and Toronto Bach Festival.
She has worked with the University of Toronto Women’s Chorus, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Blue Ash Presbyterian Church and the Elmer Iseler Singers.
Yoo also brings professional choral singing experience, having sung under numerous noted conductors.
As an advocate for contemporary choral music, she premiered new choral music at the University of Toronto, University of Cincinnati and the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. She presented two recent premieres with the O‘ahu Choral Society.
